How did you get the idea for The Company of Angels series?

I practiced yoga for ten years before writing Where Demons Fear to Tread. I apprenticed to teach Ashtanga at one point, but ironically had to quit once I realized I needed more time to write.

The idea for the novel came from a yoga workshop given by world-renowned teacher John Scott. In his practice, he focused on the flow of the breath in sync with the movements of the body. He introduced the rise and fall of the arms like wings in the sun salutations.

He also recommended a book called How Yoga Works, by Geshe Michael Roach. There was a single line in that book that talked about angels. The subject had never come up in the context of yoga before, and I was intrigued.

Over the years, I have known many yoga teachers. Some of them have been angelic. Some of them have not. The heroine, Guardian angel/yoga teacher Serena, was inspired by some of my old friends in the Toronto yoga community, who live their lives according to the principles by which Serena lives hers.
